Showdown Over the City Finals

Here are some photos from the finals at the Showdown over the City. The jumps looked amazing! Saw some really sick floaty 540s on the first jump. It looked like a lot of fun.

The 5th Annual Quiksilver Showdown Over the City

Grouse Mountain hosted it’s 5th Annual Quiksilver Showdown Over the City this weekend, and it was awesome! Born five years ago , the event has grown to attract top talent from across Canada and the US with the TTR World Tour 4 Star point designation. Over the past few years the event had been caught in bad weather systems but this year that was not the case. The sun was out, and the beer garden was jumping. Another exciting factor about this years Showdown was the jumps. The Grouse Park Crew built the best course to date. Each of the jumps in the double jump line could have been featured as a stand alone Big Air kicker. With 20′ tall wedges and 60′ decks these kickers were no joke.

Here are a few shots I captured at the event.

Drop In! "What's the speed?" "Straight in from here."

Unidentified Sender!

Heli Cam!

Judges judge. Darcy Sharpe flying.

Man Sized Air

The top jump was no joke.

Snowboarding Roayalty - Chris Dufficy Happy about his cookie and riding in the finals with a huge Cab 9 to Double Wildcat.

John Versteeg $5,000 richer.

Results:

1) John Versteeg

2) Darcy Sharpe

3) Craig McMorris

Stay tuned for the Andrew Santos edit for the Filmmaker Showdown.

March – Wanted List

Hudson Bay Company – Axe
Quiksilver – Mapocho Riding Shirt
Quiksilver – Travis Rice Bib Pant
The North Face – NSE Tent Bootie III
Poler Stuff – The Man Tent
Celtek – Trippen Mittens
Stanley - Classic 8oz Flask
Oakley – Terje Haakonsen Signature Splice Goggle
Juniper Ridge – Douglas Fir Sachet

I can’t believe its March. All I feel like doing right now is snowboarding, camping and hiking. A feeling that brought on inspiration for this months Wanted List. Mixing in some new stuff and classic stuff – I started it off with a Hudson Bay axe for wood choppin’ campfires of course. Next up is the Quiksilver riding shirt, wilderness inspired snow wear to wear under the Travis Rice bib snowpants. After a long cold day on the hill there is nothing better then some North Face slippers to bring up your core temps. If you decide to stay the night, the Poler Man Tent is great for solo excursions. On any solo excursion a classic Stanley flask is a great idea, and a warm pair of Trippen mittens. Next some Terje Haakonsen signature Oakleys and a sachet of Douglas Fir to throw in your bag keeping your gear smelling like the rain forests of the northwest- Man stuff.

Throwback – Jamie Lynn

Jamie Lynn is a bowse. He was one of the first guys to push it in freestyle snowboarding. He has one of the best methods out of any rider who has ever strapped in. Check out this these clips of some of his first snowboard movie parts in Project 6, Meltdown Project and TB2. I had Project 6 on VHS tape and played it over and over until it didn’t play any more. I was studying his method to try and figure out how to do one as good as him. I still am.

Short clip from Jamie’s part in Project 6 circa 1994 – check out the headcam shots… he had to wear a back pack with the recorder in it!

Jamie in Melt Down Project circa 1995 – check out the dope method at 0:40

Jamie in TB2 circa 1992 – Jamie was known for shredding without gloves – look for 270 on at 1:19

DC Scavenger Hunt & 24 Hours of Winter

We went up to Grouse for the 24 Hours of Winter to try our luck on the DC Scavenger Hunt. We searched around the whole mountain but our eyes were not peeled enough to find one. The hidden frisbees, if found, were redeemable for prizes in the lodge! Lots of people were on the lookout and the frisbees were being tracked down left and right. Unfortunately I guess I don’t have the right skills for this game, but many were very successful on the foggy night!

The Canucks game had begun in the mist with snow-made stands.

Runs were fun to rip around, the snow was soft and the bumps were prime! Shreddable all night.

This dude was hyped on his find!!

24 Hours of Shred

Grouse Mountain is running the annual 24 Hours of Winter a.k.a 24 Hours of Shred. This is always a good time. They pack the weekend with good events and this year is no exception. Here are few shredtivities to look out for:

  • Terrain Parks: Non-stop Sat-Sun Park Jam 11pm – 1am Park Jam will be open to all amateurs skiers and snowboarders from 11pm to 1am.
  • DC Booth: DC Booth will be located in the North East area of the Canadiana Room! Come and grab some cash in the Money Booth and redeem your earnings for prizing!
    9am Saturday to 12pm Sunday
  • DC Scavenger Hunt: Find the DC frisbees hidden all around the mountain and redeem them for a prize at their booth! Check Twitter and Facebook for clues!
  • Altitudes After Dark Deck Party: We are tenting the Altitudes deck to create the perfect spot to party all night! With a beautiful view of the city, the Altitudes deck party will play host to DJ Hebejebe until 4am, and there will be prizes to be won. Take a break from the hills, listen to some music and get ready to hit the slopes again at sunrise!
I’ll be up tonight riding the park and rocking my new playlist. Have a good 24 Hours of Shred!
