Grouse Park : Rookie Park Update
The fun factor at the Grouse Mountain Rookie terrain park has increased by a very large number. After the build for the Office Booyz contest, the rookie park is looking better than it has all season…or ever, for that matter. There’s a quarter pip/spine, two tires to do whatever you want on them, filing cabinets and desks to jib, boxes setup in a C formation, a whale tail to down box combo and an exquisitely manicured jump to top it all off. I was going to take pictures of some of the features for you, but I was having the most fun riding park I’ve had all year. I’d suggest going up and checking it out for yourself, you won’t be disappointed. Props to the park crew!
Additionally, the Quiksilver terrain park now has a FIVE hit jump line. What!? Yea, you heard right, the jump set up is so amazing right now. No more needing to straight line from the lifts! Throw up a big ol’ whoop whoop for Shaw Butterworth and his jump building!
I should be studying for exams, but after riding today, I’m pretty sure I’ll be spending all weekend in the parks. You should too!
Don’t hate, just ride,
Sam
Showdown going down…Get up there!
The Quiksilver Showdown Over the City is set to go off this Friday and Saturday, and the course is looking sick! Make sure you get up Grouse Mountain both days to support the riders and check out the event. A full rundown of the goings on can be found on the Showdown website.
The course is shaping up to look like it will be just about as fun to watch as it will be to ride. A large step down, followed by a gap to snow-box, followed by a choice between a down-flat-down rail or a down rail is what competitors will be playing with. Here’s a couple of shots of the course in progress…just to get the stoke up.

View from the drop in.

Gap to snow-box to down rail options...in progress...use your imagination.

Quiksilver Showdown Over the City coming soon!
One of the biggest pro-am snowboarding events in the country is just over 3 weeks away! Make sure you mark this weekend down on the calendar, tell all your firends, and make your way out to watch some of the most progressive snowwboarding you will see anywhere in Canada including Grouse Mountain team riders.
Course plans are being finalized, invite list is being confirmed, media are booking their attendance, guest MCs Jesse Fox and Trini are writing their material, Monster Energy is getting their entourage list together, Quiksilver is deciding on what mascot costumes to rent, Coors Light is making sure they have enough beverages for the crowds, and locals will quickly be deciding whether they have what it takes to enter the qualifiers.
For all of you local shredders who want to take a run at the qualifications to earn one of the 8 qualifiers spots, go and register online here. There are only 100 spots available so get on it!
Check out last year’s video here. Sorry I am having some vimeo embedding issues.
Volunteers! If you are interested in gaining some valuable event experience either for school, volunteer hours or personal interest, please contact showdown@grousemountain.com . There are several positions available including course marshalls, event setup/takedown, registration, to name a few.
Random Rambles I
I met mini shred Nick last night while doing a few laps with Dan Jonas and crew. This kid is sick. Keep your eyes out for him in the Quiksilver park. He’s easy to spot. The smallest dude hitting the biggest stuff is a good sign that it’s him.
The term “Blogger” now identifies me, apparently. The following exchange from last night pretty much solidifies that assumption.
Sam: Hi Alice.
Alice: …Hi?
Sam: It’s Sam!
Alice: Hi Sam.
(Pause)
Alice: Sam who!?
Sam: The blogger.
Alice: OH! Hi Sam!
The Rookie park is amazingly fun right now. Everything is ride on. Even my girlfriend can hit features. Yay for progressive parks!
Nathan Jonas hurt his knee trying a ridiculous corked 7 off a tiny hit by the snowblowers. Bail or not, I was pretty impressed.
Formerly local shred Wes is back on the scene, working on restoring his local status. I ran into him lapping the park Sunday afternoon and got a few laps in with him. He’s super fun to ride with, but long hours at work keep him off the hill.
The BC Snowboard Association is holding a slopestyle competition at Grouse Mountain on February 7th, hosted by Showcase Snowboards. You need to be a BCSA member to register, check out the Facebook page or their site for details.
Fellow blogger Charlie Grinnell will be filming local boy wonder Liam Casey on Thursday with yours truly behind an old school 35mm SLR. If you’re in the park, feel free to stop by and say hi. If you’ve never seen Liam ski before, you’re in for a treat.
You may wonder why my blogs lack the visual stimulation some of the other blogs have. To be completely honest, I have so much fun riding, that I forget to pull the camera out. That and the fact that I don’t want cold hands.
SIA is over and done with and the new gear for 2010 is looking sooooo sick. Here’s a quick rundown of what I find sick…so mostly the reverse camber boards.Capita has introduced Flat Kick Technology to two more models. DC has a camberless model out. Rome is back with 1985s on more models. As for boards with camber, the choices are endless. All reverse camber boards have a sister board with camber. Now, some pictures!

Local boys Endeavour have 4 RC models for this season. The Colour series for 2010, white with rocker and orange without.
Speaking of Rome, I’ve managed to get my hands on a 2010 Artifact 1985 courtesy of the good folks over at the SDS. Dan and I will be reviewing it in the next couple weeks. Be sure to check back to get the low down on some of next season’s gear.
See you on the hill,
Sam
