More Quik Park
This Christmas break has been quite an interesting one. We have been lucky enough to run into only a few cloudy days and almost none of the typical rainy, miserable conditions that Vancouver is famous for. Still, everything has its downside. Next to no precipitation and consistent cold temperatures have lead to hard pack conditions, which are especially noticeable when the sun sets. However, with the help of Grouse Mountain’s fleet of snow makers this Christmas break, the park crew has done a good job of keeping things up to standard. Speaking of Park Crew, Shayan and I did a few filming laps with Ryan and Tom (and a quick cameo by Quentin Deboice!) when they weren’t doing maintenance and Shayan threw this little edit together. Enjoy.
A Little Update from the Park Staff
What up? What up?!!
So we figured it was about that time again. After what can only be called the early season sadness that is rain (I got to spend that week frolicking the beaches of SoCal…suckers), we’re back at it for a little park rebuild.
For those of you who haven’t graced the park in the past week, get in there! Some highlights include a nice mellow jump with a hint of the wu for those who like to get inverted, a 20’ box gap 40’ box combo for your jibbing pleasure followed by a newly renovated s-rail and a handful of other goodies. So, now’s the time with the sick weather inversion to get up and get your shots in.
Below are some teaser pics of things we’ve been working on that you’ll be enjoying soon as the snow starts falling again, and some of the mountain folk on their rounds. Oh, and on that note, a huge shout-out to the Grouse Mountain snow makers, because without them we wouldn’t even be thinking about jumps and park rebuilds.

A couple local shreds, sorry guys I forgot your names, who helped us out as we struggled to drag the rainbow rail around

Just a neat inversion shot

Tom Robinson showing us the proper technique with a spork. Aussies know best!

And last, I leave you with a teaser of new box pieces, some wood walls, and, if you look real hard, an oversized picnic table?
Warmest regards in this winter season,
Chris and the rest of the park fellas
Grouse Park : Rookie Park Update
The fun factor at the Grouse Mountain Rookie terrain park has increased by a very large number. After the build for the Office Booyz contest, the rookie park is looking better than it has all season…or ever, for that matter. There’s a quarter pip/spine, two tires to do whatever you want on them, filing cabinets and desks to jib, boxes setup in a C formation, a whale tail to down box combo and an exquisitely manicured jump to top it all off. I was going to take pictures of some of the features for you, but I was having the most fun riding park I’ve had all year. I’d suggest going up and checking it out for yourself, you won’t be disappointed. Props to the park crew!
Additionally, the Quiksilver terrain park now has a FIVE hit jump line. What!? Yea, you heard right, the jump set up is so amazing right now. No more needing to straight line from the lifts! Throw up a big ol’ whoop whoop for Shaw Butterworth and his jump building!
I should be studying for exams, but after riding today, I’m pretty sure I’ll be spending all weekend in the parks. You should too!
Don’t hate, just ride,
Sam
Random Rambles II
Hiya folks, you know the drill.
Fellow blogger Dan Jonas and I were able to get out paws on some 2010 Ride gear to take to Grouse mountain. With the help of Rodrigo Caula, proprietor of Choice Apparel, and two femmes from Grouse’s local J-Crew, Alice Gorton and Sydney Schram, we were able to test the Crush, Machete and DH on the men’s side, and the Canvas and Compact on the women’s side as well as a bunch of bindings and those crazy light boots. Keep your eyes peeled for product reviews coming soon.
Speaking of Choice Apparel, the new product was shipped out last Wednesday and the line is officially launched as of March 11th. If you haven’t already done so, hit up the site and get your orders in via email at choiceapparel@hotmail.com!
Some more Choice news. Grouse Mountain pro team rider, Jenelle Pritchard is the first girl on the Choice team. Yay!
It’s been flaking kittens for the past week and that good ol’ west coast snow is covering the mountains. It’s wet, it’s heavy, and it’s so much fun. Get out and play in the trees, but don’t slow down or get stuck.
Is it just me or is that quarter pipe amazingly fun? Good job, park crew.
I currently have no park board due to base delamination. Lucky for me, it’s been pow so I’ve been able to get my 159 out of retirement. Anyone wanna help me out with something a little/a lot smaller?
I’m going to be sitting down with the founder of Spacecraft Clothing, Stefan Hofmann, for an interactive interview this weekend. For those that haven’t heard, Spacecraft is an art project using clothing as a medium. Go and check it out. The product is sick and the art is even better. They’re currently based out of Bali and keep a grassroots feel to everything they do. Pacific Boarder will be carrying the spring line, so make sure you go and take a look. I’ll have more on Spacecraft in the next couple days.

Magnificent
Alright, dudes and duddettes. Heres a bit of an update from myself.
From Wednesday until now, the weather has been unbelievable. With Cashens and cjs description i dont think I need to describe much else, other then the sunsets!!!! Now how can you forget about that. Well here is a photo I shot of Liam Casey on January 14th, somewhere between 5 and 5 30 pm.

Liam Casey - Quiksilver Park Sunset
Shooting sunsets has to be the most difficult time to shoot. Running back and forth every 30 seconds to adjust settings, and yell at your rider to hurry the ____ up. With about 30 minutes of useable time. Getting the correct shot with only a few laps can get pretty stressful. On top of that, I found out earlier that day my camera is half broken, and now I can’t adjust ANYTHING! So on to warranty it goes.
Liam managed to pull in probally around 8 tries or so during this time, so I give him big props on that. Running up the hill half the time got him pretty beat tired. With that shoot behind us, I managed to go lock up my camera gear, and hit up some laps. A couple runs in we met up with James Anderson, Maxwell Buchanan, Peter Hunter, and Joe Mickelson. Joe took out le video, and we had a pretty successful night with that. Over the past month, ive seen alot of talent start coming out of Grouse Mountain. Skiers, and Snowboarders are really stepping up their game lately, and its getting harder and harder to keep up with it.
The day after, I got to meet cj, hes a pretty nice, chill guy, whos really got some moves behind himself. Shot a couple photos with him, and Dan Jonas, during another sunset, exactly the same as the night before. While packing up from that night, I realized the pastel like drawing over the Vancouver fog. Its a pretty neat effect if you havent seen it before. With the lights from the city coming through the clouds in different colors, it really is quite the scene.
One more thing, before I get back to studying.. I am giving a big shout out to EVERYONE on the crew of Grouse Mountain Park. They have put every effort into this park over the past few weeks, and it has really paid off. Do me a favour, and go tell them how awesome things are right now. They will really appreciate it, and they will return with more fun times to come.
