A Powder Bonanza

It’s been a busy week for myself.  Between covering the MGT snowboard camps, school starting and my girlfriend getting back from Calgary, I totally forgot that I had other things to fill you guys in on.  Namely, some of my escapades before, during and shortly after the New Year.  So, here it is now, only about a week late, a not so up to date update.

As you may have read, I injured myself while lapping the Quiksilver park one icy winter’s eve.  I figured the best way to speed up the healing process was to spend a few days in Whistler, where the snow conditions weren’t as good as the local mountains.  Obviously this would make me less depressed about not snozzboarding. So I booked a bus ticket with Greyhound.  It’s super cheap for students, coming out to $43 round trip. That’s cheaper then gas, even with the current low prices!  Anyways, I stuffed all I would need into one small backpack and trekked out to the Upper Village, where I bummed a couch off my good friend Anna, who was in town for a family reunion.  Fortunately for them, I brought the killer north shore snow conditions with me.  The night I got there, it started snowing nice big, fat flakes. I spent two days off the board, walking around town, catching up with people I hadn’t seen in over a year and looking at the boards available in Whistler, all whislt drinking a large mug of tea. I didn’t bring a travel mug, so it literally was a large mug of tea.

I spent the night of December 30th with Anna and her cousins, on the hunt for those ever elusive yam fries, eventually finding some at the base of Blackcomb at Monk’s Grill Steakhouse and Bar.  I nabbed myself a super large flower pot, to woo the ladies with and such.  There was also some pointless meandering through the streets of the village and other such hooliganistic activities, such as going into stores and trying things you probably wouldn’t buy to wear on a normal day, such as a mummified version of myself.  I also found a sign that could get me out of daily responsibilities.

The next day, I woke up nice and early to get the most out of the day.  That was the plan, anyways.  I rolled out at 1 in the afternoon and got myself presentable before getting some breakfast for lunch.  Anna’s mom was nice enough to prepare a full meal for me, complete with a large mug of tea.  Awesome!  After scarfing the eats down, I went off to the village to browse shops and see what was kicking around Whislter in terms of reverse camber boards.  Surprise! There was nothing.  Looks like I’m not getting one this year. Dang.  Anyways, I spent the majority of my time at Showcase by the IGA talking to shop guy Jay.  He was super rad.  We discussed snowboarding and almost everything related to the latter for about an hour.  If you’re ever in Whistler, be sure to stop by and say hi to Jay.  He may even give you a high five.  I also purchased some rub on wax and daydreamed of New Years day on the mountain.

That night was New Years Eve and what a gong show it was.  Anna and I met up with local friends and shred heads Becka Peglar and Oli Mason, accompied by our friend Shawn Cavanaugh from The OG Bay, California, claining Pac as a source of pride.  That a direct quote.  Much ridiculousness ensued at The Crystal Lounge, where we sang along to journey, danced the robot, exchanged high fives and I somehow managed to climb a lamp post. The pictures tell most of the story.

Thumbs up for the robot!

I tried climbing it the next day and was amazed at how difficult it was.

I went to bed at 3 in the morning and woke up at 6 to go shred.  It had been snowing all night and it was still snowing when I woke up and got to the hill.  I did a couple of laps through the park, getting frist tracks in there.  People like going up to the bowls for first tracks.  Little secret for you all, park is where the untouched powder is and riding a box with a bunch of fresh pow is just an added bonus.  After a few laps, I met up with my buddy Jon Scott and did a coupld tree lines with him before we decided to head over to 7th Heaven, which was on standby.  We waited at teh base for about an hour before they finally opened the lift and were able to get 4 runs of fresh tracks before the crowds hit.  Best four hits ever.  While most stayed on the well traveled paths, we cut some trees lines between the carve tracks and were able to keep the snow beneath out boards fresh with endless line options.  I eventually said bye to Jon and met up with Oli, Becka and Shawn who had managed to wake up and march over to the hill.  More great powder runs ensued and a lap through the park before we called it a day and head down the mountain, picking up some hit tracks on the way down.  Another secret, stay to the edges of runs to get those super fun quick hits that you can spin madly off of.

Waiting for first tracks.

We all woke up to ride and the day turned out epic. No complaints here.

I left Whistler that night and had a hearty home cooked meal that night.  The next morning, I was up at 6 again and this time, I was heading down to Baker after hearing that they were getting some dry, fluffy powder that you could motor through.  I primed my big mountain board and hit some backcountry style booters, carved nice, narrow chutes and tweaked methods off cliffs all while staying in bounds. Ohhhh yea!  Want to ask me about the best week of my life?  You just read about it.  A straight week of powder.  What more could I ask for excpet…a few more?

On the other hand, powder sucks.  Hit the Quiksilver park.  Hella handrails!

MGT Academy Update

It’s official. Three girls from the first round of selections for the MGT Academy have been chosen.  The camps at Grouse Mountain produced Marie-Andre Racine, Shelly Julio and Jenna-Mae Togado as candidates for the MGT Academy.  The Academy will pick one girl from the pool of candidates this summer who will get the opportunity to be trained by pro female riders for rapid transit to a career in snowboarding next season.  Neat! If only Translink was that good.

The three girls have also landed spots in the Roxy Chickadee Jam host by Grouse Mountain on March 1, 2009, where they’ll get a chance to strut and polish their skills. Double neat! Be sure to check out the event.  You may see one of them on the cover of a snowboarding magazine in the not so distant future.

Little known fact, Jenna was fighting a bout of unhappy stomach on the second day of camp due to something she ate the night before and she still rocked. That is so punk rock. Who said girls can’t shred?

Three sick park skiers; one sick video

I found this super cool video on Vimeo by a dude named Kyle Decker.  This edit is awesome, with the 3 best park skiers out there in my opinion (Mike Hornbeck, Ahmet Dadali, Henrik Harlaut) shredding on this super small hill somewhere in the states.  Kyle Decker is one of the big-wigs at Level 1 Productions

Be sure to get your butt up to Grouse Mountain, the Quiksilver park is goin off and MGT Camps are there this weekend.  Without further adoooooooo…

keep it poppin,

chuck

PS – Still working with Future Shop to get a camera, still working with vimeo.com to set up a Vimeo+ account.

Boards, Boards, Boards.

img_0521I’ve been told to stay off the hill just a couple more days, so today I figured I’d go look at getting a new board.  I’ve been thinking about this for a while now and had settled on getting something with Banana or Rocker Tech.  Due to the mad Christmas rush, EVERYTHING is gone.  I had a list in prioritized order.  Here’s what’s going on on the local scene.  I called reps, distributors, company headquarters, stores, everything.  Here’s some info you, if you looking into any of these boards.

Capita Horrorscope FK

Good luck finding this one.  Your best bet is going online and even those are selling out fast.  I found the 148 at The Source.  Only 5% tax, on sale and free shipping. Win win! There are a few other online stores with the 152’s and 156’s.  Take a look.  Your best bet would be to find a friend who lives in Washington, get the free shipping and then drive down to pick it up. So go ride Baker and get a few numbers!  If you can wait, Pacific Boarder will have some more coming in January, at the earliest.  You can go in and see if they can hold one for you, or call and ask to speak to one of the managers.

Rome Artifact 1985

I shouldn’t be sharing these secrets with you because this is the board I want, but I’m a nice guy.  Pacific Boarder has this one in a 153 and a 156.  The price has been knocked down to $459.99+tax for Boxing Week.  Go out and have a look.  If you’re looking for the smaller 147’s and 150’s, once again, check The Source, they’ve got them for $450.

Lib Tech Skate Banana or Box Scratcher

The Skate Banana is nowhere to be found, but after some phone calls, I found out that the Boardroom in North Vancouver has a 152 sitting around.  They pulled it out of the back when I called.  It’s gonna go fast, so if this is the one you’re looking form hurry over, or call dibs over the phone.

The Box Scratcher was MIA at all the places I called and went to, but staff at the Boardroom assured me they’d be getting more in soon.  If you’re willing to buy this deck used, there’s a guy selling it on craigslist for $400.  He’s never used it, so it might be worth checking out.

Also, none of the Lib Tech stock is on sale.  They’re the money makers this year!

Nitro Sub Pop

Comor has a few of these at various locations around Vancouver.  The one on West 4th had one left in a 154.  They’ve got it marked down to $399.99, making it one of the cheaper Rocker boards out there.

K2 World Wide Weapon Rocker

If you can stand the glaringly bright top sheet, then Comor also has this baby stocked.  Like the Sup Pop, there’s only one left at the West 4th location in a 154.  I’d assume the other locations are left with slim pickins too.  The tag on this one reads the same as the Sub Pop.

Stepchild Jib

One word. Coastal Riders.  Okay, so two words.  This is the only rocker Coastal has left.  They’re gonna go pretty quick, so I’d pay a quick visit to their shop or warehouse to check them out.

If you’re wondering what I picked up, my answer is nothing.  As marked down as these boards are, it’s still too much for a poor student like me to afford.  However, I am accepting donations in the form of monetary value or information on where I can get the Artifact 1985 for cheaper!

On a happier note, I’m heading off to Whistler for a few days, so be sure to check back over the next couple days for some fantastic pictures and words about how tricks are up there.

Also, for all you girls out there, don’t forget about the MGT Snowboards camps running on Grouse Mountain on January 3rd and 4th.  There’s still spots left and it’s going to be good times.  It’s even in the name! (More Good Times, if you were wondering.)

Keep it real,

Sam

Monday Madness: Link Fest

A few noteworthy stories I stumbled upon in the last couple of weeks:

MGT Snowboard Camp announces MGT Academy and it’s lineup for 2009 including a weekend at Grouse Mountain:

In 2009, MGT will be holding three, two-day winter camps, the first being a camp at Canada Olympic Park on Dec13th-14th, the venue for the first ever Burton Canadian Open in February. Close on it s heels is another camp for the coastal crowd at Grouse Mountain in North Vancouver Jan 3rd-4th. To cap off the season, MGT is once again returning to Alberta, its original breeding grounds, to session Mt. Norquay’s  re-vamped and professionally cut snowboard park on April 4th-5th.

TTR World Tour has launched a new website.

Grouse Mountain’s opening day weekend had loads of people building kickers and enjoying the snow. BTW, if you have pics you want to share, throw a link in the comments.

Here is the craziest weather forecast ever for Grouse Mountain. It’s really detailed and surprisingly accurate.

The North Face has now launched an iPhone app in the same vein as Snocator et. al. Still don’t have an iPhone to check it out… wish I did. Feel free to post reviews in the comments.

Now, I want to thank everyone who has submitted an application to join our team of blogospondents. The opportunity has now come to a close. I’ll be reviewing all the applications in the next couple of days and will communicate with each applicant by the end of the week.
