Snow in the City!

North Vancouver is a gold mine for handrails, but since we rarely get snow these rails don’t often see any action. Well we finally had some snow fall last night so Trint Thomas (newest Endeavor Am), Jeremy Cox and myself got down to work right away before the snow melted. We set up a 14-flat-11 stair down-flat-down. It’s a rail in my neighborhood that I’ve been looking to ski for the last couple of years.

Oakley Park Jams – Round 1

Oakley Night Jams - Round 1

The first Oakley Park Jam of the season kicked off last night in the Grouse Park. Clear skies made perfect conditions for the throw down and I was stoked to see the turnout and the level of shred at the jam format event. Over 50 skiers and snowboarders showed up to rip the park for prizes and bragging rights. The Park Crew started the crowd off at the rail features near the top of the park. The crew gave the park shreds a short period of time to jam on a decided jib to win prizes from Oakley. Good tricks were called out on the megaphone with the ‘Banger Siren’. After moving through a few rail features they finished off at the Cut Line kicker. And then it started puking snow. The Park Jams are open to everyone. There is no sign up or limited number of runs and anyone can play. All you have to do is show up and drop in on the feature that the Oakley crew and Park Crew call out over the mic. It is just a session like any session except during the jam the you can win prizes. Come out for the next Park Jam on Friday January 20th and don’t forget your tricks!

Hello!

Hello Everyone!

My name is Matthew Waring and this is my first year producing content for the grouse blog! I am exited to get this season going and to spend as much time as I possibly can up in the mountains. I am originally from Ontario and am currently going to school at Capilano University. I have been living in BC for 3 years, one in Whistler and two in Vancouver. My main passions are skiing and photography so I am happy to be able to combine the two using Grouse Park blog as an outlet. When I’m not in school you will see me in the mountains skiing, filming and generally having fun, because we live in an insane part of the world!

Here are a couple of clips from December in the Hike Park – One of the best parts about this set up is that you can re-learn all of those rusty tricks you may have lost from the summer. Perfectly mellow features to get tricks on, before taking them to bigger stuff. That’s it for now – see you up there.

One warm day at Grouse, we found the park had melted. So, as the sun set, we pulled out the camera, played on this rail and had just as much fun. Check it out!

Here’s to a fresh start this 08/09 season…

I just wanted to send a message out to all you Grouse Mountain rippers that the season is almost upon us, and we are trying desperately to get the jib zone on Paradise set up as soon as possible for you to enjoy. We have lots to look forward to this season, as we have added some new staff that we saw in the park often and gave us feedback last season, including a park groomer as well as a ranger. We have also built some new rails and other jibs that we hope you will enjoy, as I know the Grouse pro team, park staff and myself surely will.

We are in the park daily and we ride it when we’re not working, so we try our best to keep it fun, progressive and well maintained as best we can for you to ride. If you ever are riding and have a suggestion or see something that might need some attention, don’t hesitate to approach one of us and let us know. Like I said, we are park riders too, so we want the best park to ride just as you all do. We really appreciate the constructive criticism and ideas, in fact we encourage them, as I mentioned we build the park for park riders just like you and us, but being extremely negative or straight up hateful gets nothing accomplished and is very unproductive…no matter what you want to accomplish in life.

I look forward to seeing many of you up Grouse this season having fun and enjoying all the hard work that is put into producing one of Canada’s best terrain parks.

Numero Uno

Here we go, my first blog of the season, I’m hoping to keep my blogs updated as frequently as I can throughout the season all season long. I will be discussing any and all topics I feel will keep you interested… or not.

Today as I got of the tram this morning it was pouring rain, but as I was getting closer to the peak office I began to notice the odd wet snowflake (if you can call them that), which then turned to a heavy snow fall.

YES, it is snowing up here at Grouse and sticking! Now, I’m not getting my hopes up, as the weather forecast says rain is on its way, but either way, it seems like whenever the first snow falls I still get that super excited feeling I used to get when I was wee lil’ boy. I just like the way snow smells, feels and looks, I love when there is enough snow to blanket and cover all the worlds imperfections, making it a perfect winter wonderland.

With the snow on its way, I just wanted to get all you boys and girls excited and remind you that it was on Nov. 27 last season when we opened up the Paradise Jib Park…so get your gear ready and stay tuned!
