Alterna Shoot

At the end of the 2009 season, I was invited to film the Alterna Shoot alongside Charlie Grinnell.   This was an amazing experience involving superb riding, course and location.  The weather was in our favour, providing the shoot with soft snow and the occasional cloud.  As both days came to a close, my P2 cards had been filled and I knew I had something.  Here’s the edit of what I came up with, hope you all enjoy it.

Park Skiing and Ben Neil

Throughout my 2.5 seasons of skiing park, I have noticed quite a few things that I think separate park skiers from the rest of the ski industry. Aside from the obvious one of skiing in terrain parks and making use of having tips on both ends of our skis, we also have a very unique dress code that makes most of us easy to pick out of a crowd. The ‘gangster’ trend has completely taken over park skiing. Having a jacket that reaches your knees is no longer looked at as stupid and un-functional, but rather stylish and cool. With a jacket that big, baggy pants are a necessity to keep things looking proportional. As always though, there are some people who go against the trend and wear tight pants, which are slowly making their rise to popularity.

Along with the fashion side of things, we park riders also seem to have more of a ‘connection’ on the hill. Whenever I’m skiing the park alone, I can almost always find someone to do laps with. Whether I know the person well, or even know them at all, we share the common interest of park skiing. This was one of the things that probably kept me interested in the park scene back when I first started out. If my memory serves me well, this is how I started skiing with Ben Neil about 2-3 seasons ago. Ben got into the park skiing scene a season before me, and I remember in my early days before I got to know Ben, thinking to myself, ‘I wish I could ski that well.’ Well it’s 3 years later and Ben is still way ahead of me in the park, but that never stops us from having fun skiing together.

With that being said, Ben and I (along with a few others) spent Saturday doing photo-laps in the park and managed to come out with quite a few shots that I personally am very happy with. Here are the final results.

Quick Grouse Edit

Hey Guys,  Went up filming Thursday night with Simon and Shayan to test out the Steadicam.  The Steadicam was incredibly hard to use and in most cases was shakier then handheld … but I’ll get the hang of it.  Anyways it was cloudy up there so I decided to mix up the colors a bit … lemme know what you think.

T’s in January… I’m Loving It!

This winter has been quite the weather reporters dream, especially in BC, but more specifically Vancouver. We went from a mild and wet fall to a freezing cold -20 with wind chill in mid December all the while being pounded with snow. Vancouver, in the city received roughly 100cm of the fluffy white stuff in December, and let me say… the city was not prepared (nor were its citizens), but it sure was perty to look at. And so here where we are wearing t-shirts in mid-January thanks to a temperature inversion. If you’re not sure what a temperature inversion is, the kind folks at wikipedia.org describe it as: ‘an increase in temperature with height, or to the layer within which such an increase occurs’.

There is nothing like a temperature inversion, you wake up its grey, ugly and cold so you think it’s like that everywhere, but when you get about halfway up the mountain you are pleasantly surprised with blue skies and a warmer temperatures the higher you go. The city is covered and you feel as if you are on another planet, standing on top of the mountain looking out at a sea of clouds.

If you have the chance try and make your way up one of the local Vancouver ski hills over the next couple days as it is supposed to remain an inversion until possibly Monday or Tuesday.

Enjoy.

Oakley Night Jams: Numero Uno

oakley-night-jam-numero-unoFor those of you who weren’t aware, Friday night was the inaugural Oakley Night Jam of the season, brought to you by Coastal Riders and, of course, Oakley.  The cold temperatures may have kept many riders at home, but for those that came out, I’m pretty sure it was a good time.  Coastal had a couple boxes full of goodies such as shirts, belts, and a pair of goggles to be given away.

The jam itself got off to a slow start, but eventually picked up as the loot started getting alittle more scarce.  It was fun to see those new to the park scene pushing themselves and the up and comers throw down. The format was simple.  They called out a trick to be done on the 40′ box in the Quicksilver Park and first person to nail it got a prize.

Don't look so surprised, man. That little frontside board DID just get you a Forum tee.

If any of you know who this rider is, please, let me know so I can throw his name on here.

For those that missed out, this was unfortunately the last Night Jam of 2008.  They’ll be back in the new year, trying to convince you that Santa still exists with prizes and high fives aplenty.  Till then, up your arsenal and head back in January with a fresh bag of jibtastic flavour.

PS: Ditch the park gear and go play in the pow tomorrow!

[Catch phrase here] I’ll come up with something, don’t worry.

Happy Holidays

So it’s that time of year, kids are starting their Christmas breaks and the malls are madness….if you haven’t started your shopping yet, I feel for ya. So, to help relieve you of your holiday stresses, we have been able to throw a few features into the Quiksilver Park to create a line. All the snow we have been receiving lately has definitely helped as is the cold temperatures for making snow, and if Mother Nature continues to be cooperative we will be up and running at full throttle very shortly.

I would also like to welcome to the Grouse Mountain Terrain Park blog crew, the newly acquired blogospondents, which are; Cam Harris, Charlie Grinnell, Daniel Jonas, Scott Titterington, Chris Jones and Sam Masih. These fellows will be taking pictures, filming and writing blogs for grousepark.com about all things ski and snowboard related within the local scene, so keep an eye out for their informative and interesting views on whats going on.

Also, tonight’s our first Oakley Night Jam event of the season, so come on up for some jibtastic fun and a chance to take home some sweet prizes, but bundle up as its gonna be a cold one.

The Park Crew and myself would like to wish you all a safe and Happy Holiday season.

Park Projects

grindingThis season at Grouse we have designed and built some new features for the park. We decided to keep it simple and try our best to keep it Mother Earth friendly. We were able to create our new features using roughly 80% reused or recycled material that I found either on Grouse or on the internet.

chillin-with-big-boyOur biggest feature is a 40’ long, 8”diameter retired snowmaking pipe that has been raised to 9’ and will be set atop a spine as a flat bar. The other big project is a recycled pontoon trailer cut into a fat stall bar for atop our QP that will be maintained more frequently and properly with the help of our new park groomer. Also in the mix will be a variety of steel and plastic barrels, rails and random jibs.

Stay tuned for our opening date, as we are trying our best to get things open up at Grouse Mountain so all can come out and start playing on our new features.

Here’s to a fresh start this 08/09 season…

I just wanted to send a message out to all you Grouse Mountain rippers that the season is almost upon us, and we are trying desperately to get the jib zone on Paradise set up as soon as possible for you to enjoy. We have lots to look forward to this season, as we have added some new staff that we saw in the park often and gave us feedback last season, including a park groomer as well as a ranger. We have also built some new rails and other jibs that we hope you will enjoy, as I know the Grouse pro team, park staff and myself surely will.

We are in the park daily and we ride it when we’re not working, so we try our best to keep it fun, progressive and well maintained as best we can for you to ride. If you ever are riding and have a suggestion or see something that might need some attention, don’t hesitate to approach one of us and let us know. Like I said, we are park riders too, so we want the best park to ride just as you all do. We really appreciate the constructive criticism and ideas, in fact we encourage them, as I mentioned we build the park for park riders just like you and us, but being extremely negative or straight up hateful gets nothing accomplished and is very unproductive…no matter what you want to accomplish in life.

I look forward to seeing many of you up Grouse this season having fun and enjoying all the hard work that is put into producing one of Canada’s best terrain parks.

Pray for snow.

Numero Uno

Here we go, my first blog of the season, I’m hoping to keep my blogs updated as frequently as I can throughout the season all season long. I will be discussing any and all topics I feel will keep you interested… or not.

Today as I got of the tram this morning it was pouring rain, but as I was getting closer to the peak office I began to notice the odd wet snowflake (if you can call them that), which then turned to a heavy snow fall.

YES, it is snowing up here at Grouse and sticking! Now, I’m not getting my hopes up, as the weather forecast says rain is on its way, but either way, it seems like whenever the first snow falls I still get that super excited feeling I used to get when I was wee lil’ boy. I just like the way snow smells, feels and looks, I love when there is enough snow to blanket and cover all the worlds imperfections, making it a perfect winter wonderland.

With the snow on its way, I just wanted to get all you boys and girls excited and remind you that it was on Nov. 27 last season when we opened up the Paradise Jib Park…so get your gear ready and stay tuned!
