You Look Good

This weekend, the Seymour stop of the ‘You Look Good Riders Cup’ went off. A course consisting of one rail hit (3 options) and 2 jumps was the venue for professional and amateur snowboarders from all over the world. One mentionable result is Grouse’s own Kevin Dzah brought home first place in the Grom (12 and under) category. The rest of the results can be seen at www.youlookgood.ca.

I, of course, was out taking pictures, here are some of the better shots from the day.

Orage March Madness

This past Sunday, Vancouver’s only ski comp of the season, Orage March Madness, went down at Seymour. It was a perfect sunny day for a perfect comp. Unlike typical slopestyle format, 2 runs take your best score, this contest went down in jam fashion. Riders were assigned to categories and when your category was called you had 20 minutes to session anything on course on try to impress the judges. Good fun was had by all and in the end last year’s winner, Todd Loukras out of Rossland ended up reclaiming top spot with Peter Hunter, who had a, shall we say, different run coming in second and ex-Grouse local/now Whistler kid, James Anderson bringing up third place. Shout out to another ex-Grouse local, Liam Casey for claiming the best trick of the day and a new pair of boots with a lip-270 onto the down-flat-down handrail. Killing it.

As always, I had my camera out in full force, trying to get some shots. Not everything turned out the way I wanted, but here’s what I came up with.

Rain Rain, Go Away…

As Farmer’s Almanac predicted, this season has been an El Nino year. What this means is that there is lots of moisture and cold air in the early season, which resulted in lots of snow at Grouse Mountain and gave us an early start to the season. Following this, a warm ocean current comes up from the Californian coast, bringing lots of moisture with it. This means lots of rain, and anyone who has been at any of the locals in the last few weeks can tell you first hand that this is definitely an El Nino season. Still, the skies finally cleared up for a couple of days and I managed to get a few hours of shooting in before the rain came today with Bryce and Shayan who, by the way, are among the few consistently toughing out the bad weather this season.

More Quik Park

This Christmas break has been quite an interesting one. We have been lucky enough to run into only a few cloudy days and almost none of the typical rainy, miserable conditions that Vancouver is famous for. Still, everything has its downside. Next to no precipitation and consistent cold temperatures have lead to hard pack conditions, which are especially noticeable when the sun sets. However, with the help of Grouse Mountain’s fleet of snow makers this Christmas break, the park crew has done a good job of keeping things up to standard. Speaking of Park Crew, Shayan and I did a few filming laps with Ryan and Tom (and a quick cameo by Quentin Deboice!) when they weren’t doing maintenance and Shayan threw this little edit together. Enjoy.
