To Be 13 Again…

PG>13 header

Hey all you ski groms,

Turning 19 means you’re legal in BC.  21 means you’re legal in the States. 18 means you’re legal all around the world EXCEPT the States and Canada.  But, if you’re younger than 13, you could have a shot at being the next K2 grom.  Remember Sean Petit?  See how he blew up?  You could be k2′s next Sean Petit.  Newschoolers.com, Sean Petit and K2 Skis bring you the PG>13 contest.  It’s simple. If you’re younger than 13, get a video together, send it in and you could will a FULL sponsorship from K2 Skis.  Note that I said full sponsorship, just just a free pair.  You get to give your input about design and all that fun stuff.  Make your way over to Newschoolers.com and get your video in. Oh, and Sean picks the winner.  I think that’s all you need to know. Now go filming.

Walrus Design: Let’em Have Fun Contest

walrus-header

Hey folks!

For those of you that haven’t heard, I’ve recently started my own clothing company.  I’m super stoked on this project finally taking off after a 3 year planning process.  Before you get the wrong idea and think this is a “Look at me!” post, let me say that Walrus Design has finally taken off and there’s some hype around it.  The team is growing and it contains an impressive line up of riders too! Okay, now you can think that this is a “Look at me!” post.  However, I’m gonna make it worth your while.

This contest is specifically for the readers of Grousepark.com.  You’ve been reading all season, and we here at the site value that.  We’d have no jobs if you all didn’t read what we had to write.  To show you that we feel the love, Walrus is giving out some shirts.  All you have to do is, as the title states, go have some good, clean, PG-rated fun.  Make a video or take a picture of you and your friends hanging out, going skating, singing along to Don’t Stop Believing by Journey really loud or exchanging high fives.  Maybe all of the above!  If you’re having a good time, I wanna see it.

All pictures MUST be in .jpeg format (if they’re not, I’m not gonna look at them, sorry…I’m lazy.) and all videos must be posted on a vieo hosting somewhere on the interwebs (YouTube, Vimeo etc.).  You can email the pictures and links to sam@grousepark.com. Contest closes on May 18th, so get your submissions in before then. Top three submissions get gear and extras.  Now go have some fun!

Left to Right: Nathan Jonas, Sam Masih (me), Shayan Aghourlikhani, Antosh Cimoszko and Michael "Giv'er" McClelland

Get your Walrus on!

The Glen Fake Contest

As many of you are already aware, Glen Plake is both the man and the legend of extreme skiing. For those of you who don’t know Glen Plake, see if you can get a hold of a copy of The Blizzard of Aahhhs.

The man...

...the legend.

Glen Plake, and his ridiculous ‘hawk, can now win you some sweet swag, thanks to John Symms (also a man and somewhat of a legend), and all you have to do is grow a ‘hawk…well a foauxhawk.

Up for grabs are a pair of Salomon STH 16 bindings, some goggles from Scott, and stickers. Yay stickers!

So check it out and pay homage to the greatest skier to ever hit the slopes. All the details can be found on John Symms blog.

The man really is a legend…

Was that a monoski? Yep, that was a mono ski.

Sick.

Calgary Trip

belzile_calagary_qp_finalsIt all started when I got an email from my Westbeach guy Jon Cartwright about the “Ante up” contest at C.O.P in Calgary. I did the contest last year and it was a good time, a slope style event with nice jumps, everyone from our snowboarding cirlcle was there, and alot of the industry people too. So I though Why Not?

So we got a crew together, Mark Sollors, Hayden Rensch (filmer) and Russell Dalby (photog), and decided to drive out cause we planned on staying to hit some rails after the contest. We found out a couple days before leaving that the contest was turn into a 1/4 pipe contest… None of us are really into pipes but we had this whole thing planned out and we went for it anyways thinking “what the hell, lets just do it and then film some rails”.

The day we’re leaving the Coquihalla Hwy is closed due to mud slides! so we have to go north through Whistler, Duffy lake road, which is fresh with snow and gnarly. We pulled these aussies out of the ditch with Russell’s F-350. We finally get to Sicamous, and now Rogers Pass is closed due to Avalanches. So we meet up with our pal Jeff Patterson (Photographer). He’s been stranded there for Days waititng on the road to open and he’s telling us all about his crazy adventure. S0 we’re checking the road updates every 20 mins. At midnight the road opens so we book it! Of course it’s snowy and there’s black ice everywhere but we powered through it. Got to Calgary at 5:30 am. Yes we drove through the night.

So I’m super beat from the drive but still going cause of all the red bull I’ve been drinking. We sign up and it’s time to practice… My practice was doing park laps and I called it a day. The next day, contest day, I was feeling 100 times better then the day prior.  I practiced on the 1/4 pipe, it was going ok. Mark was killing it in his heat with b/s 7 and going bigger and bigger till he hit the deck and hurt his back. He made finals but couldn’t ride anymore. I just made it through to finals after figuring out how to do b/s rodeos on the QP in the last 20mins of my heat. in finals I just tried doing the b/s rodeos as big as I could. then I started trying to bring them around to 7, but that didn’t go so well. I hit the deck and sprained my wrist pretty good. But in the end I got 5th place and won a little bit of money so I was super happy with that.

We were all injured after the contest so our rail trip didn’t go as good as we wanted it. We brought Jed Anderson along with us to Edmonton and basically watched him kill it on every rail. We drove back on a sunny day, the roads were dry and safe and the scenery was sweet. Now Mark and I are recovering from our injuries.

Thanks Evan Park for the photos!
