Paradise jib park is up and running for the 2009/2010 winter season. Eight features were moved into our expanded terrain for some early season jib action.
With mother nature giving us some natural, and the snowmaking team at grouse adding to the snowbase, we were able to move some snow around and bring a progressive lineup of jibs. Check the pictures.
The fun factor at the Grouse Mountain Rookie terrain park has increased by a very large number. After the build for the Office Booyz contest, the rookie park is looking better than it has all season…or ever, for that matter. There’s a quarter pip/spine, two tires to do whatever you want on them, filing cabinets and desks to jib, boxes setup in a C formation, a whale tail to down box combo and an exquisitely manicured jump to top it all off. I was going to take pictures of some of the features for you, but I was having the most fun riding park I’ve had all year. I’d suggest going up and checking it out for yourself, you won’t be disappointed. Props to the park crew!
Additionally, the Quiksilver terrain park now has a FIVE hit jump line. What!? Yea, you heard right, the jump set up is so amazing right now. No more needing to straight line from the lifts! Throw up a big ol’ whoop whoop for Shaw Butterworth and his jump building!
I should be studying for exams, but after riding today, I’m pretty sure I’ll be spending all weekend in the parks. You should too!
Sunny skies, pro riders, and a jump bigger than anything the North Shore has seen before… March 29th was a pretty darn good day for a photo shoot. Grouse local, Jason Macfarlane was up Grouse Mountain to shoot the Alterna/Showdown Over the City after session. Here are some of his shots.
Check the goggle shot at the end…damn!
No grab. Huge.
When the takeoff is taller than the scaffolding, you know the jump is good.
Liam Casey corking out.
Timed perfectly...
I got a shot! Jason said he tried this shot about 30 times and these two were the olny ones that worked out. Click the image and head over to newschoolers.com to vote for it!
Beauty.
More shots to come later in the week. Keep checking back!
Word is Grouse Mountain is in top form right now. Get up there before the season is over!
Here is a quick update from Showdown Over The City, but in a different way. All the dudes in this video are from a group called Family Tree and they were all there for the contest, however they found the rookie and quik parks pretty fun… check it!
We had an awesome shoot yesterday on the showdown course as well, Mr. Liam Casey himself was putting double flips to his feet but they just managed to get away from him, we may be allowed to have another crack later in the week, keep it locked and loaded to grousepark.com and www.YOUTHofTODAY.ca because I know he will stick a few if he gets the chance. Also big props to pro team rider Spencer Watson, he overshot the jump, landing at about 15 feet from the flat bottom, that’s a huge fall! And he got up and walked away, so props!
I met mini shred Nick last night while doing a few laps with Dan Jonas and crew. This kid is sick. Keep your eyes out for him in the Quiksilver park. He’s easy to spot. The smallest dude hitting the biggest stuff is a good sign that it’s him.
The term “Blogger” now identifies me, apparently. The following exchange from last night pretty much solidifies that assumption.
Sam: Hi Alice.
Alice: …Hi?
Sam: It’s Sam!
Alice: Hi Sam.
(Pause)
Alice: Sam who!?
Sam: The blogger.
Alice: OH! Hi Sam!
The Rookie park is amazingly fun right now. Everything is ride on. Even my girlfriend can hit features. Yay for progressive parks!
Nathan Jonas hurt his knee trying a ridiculous corked 7 off a tiny hit by the snowblowers. Bail or not, I was pretty impressed.
Formerly local shred Wes is back on the scene, working on restoring his local status. I ran into him lapping the park Sunday afternoon and got a few laps in with him. He’s super fun to ride with, but long hours at work keep him off the hill.
The BC Snowboard Association is holding a slopestyle competition at Grouse Mountain on February 7th, hosted by Showcase Snowboards. You need to be a BCSA member to register, check out the Facebook page or their site for details.
Fellow blogger Charlie Grinnell will be filming local boy wonder Liam Casey on Thursday with yours truly behind an old school 35mm SLR. If you’re in the park, feel free to stop by and say hi. If you’ve never seen Liam ski before, you’re in for a treat.
You may wonder why my blogs lack the visual stimulation some of the other blogs have. To be completely honest, I have so much fun riding, that I forget to pull the camera out. That and the fact that I don’t want cold hands.
SIA is over and done with and the new gear for 2010 is looking sooooo sick. Here’s a quick rundown of what I find sick…so mostly the reverse camber boards.Capita has introduced Flat Kick Technology to two more models. DC has a camberless model out. Rome is back with 1985s on more models. As for boards with camber, the choices are endless. All reverse camber boards have a sister board with camber. Now, some pictures!

Speaking of Rome, I’ve managed to get my hands on a 2010 Artifact 1985 courtesy of the good folks over at the SDS. Dan and I will be reviewing it in the next couple weeks. Be sure to check back to get the low down on some of next season’s gear.
