Want To Win $5000?

The clock is ticking down on the SanDisk Best Photo Sequence contest. April 1, 2010 is the deadline – which means you only have about 30 days to get your sequences uploaded for a chance to win $5,000!

SanDisk has teamed up with Freeskier to put on this epic photo sequence contest. Here’s how it works:

1. Get out on the hill and shoot some sequences

2. Morph your sequences

3. Upload your best sequences (from this year or from years past) to BestPhotoSequence.com.

4. Repeat steps 1 – 3 throughout the season as many times as you’d like.

5. Sit back and wait to see if you’ve won the grand prize of $5,000 cash money.

The contest closes April 1, 2010, so get to it, and good luck!

Keep It Real Grouse!

Do You Know What Beef Is?

What is beef?  According to deceased rapper Biggie Smalls, beef is when you need two gats to go to sleep.  By that definition, it would appear that there is no such beef between the parks at Grouse Mountain and Mount Seymour.  Most likely because we’re not located in east Brooklyn.  In any case, any one who knows anything about the local scene is well aware that there is, unfortunately, beef between the two mountains.

It’s not intermountain beef either.  It’s strictly park related.  Maybe I’m just old fashioned, but when I was growing up riding, I enjoyed both Grouse and Seymour.  Yea, I went to Grouse way more often, but I got up to Seymour every now and then.  I was just stoked to ride, didn’t matter where, didn’t matter who had more snow, or who had a better park, or how much the food was, or whether you had to drive up or not.  A day on the hill was a day on the hill.  Now, it seems like people want to talk shit more than they want to ride.  Listening to all the drama that’s going on within the local scene is like reading a script off Peak Season or the OC.  It’s absolutely ridiculous.

I’ve heard people say “Why doesn’t Grouse put in some corrugated pipe?”  Why does every park have to have the same features?  Seymour has corrugated piping set up and yes, it’s super fun.  BUT! Grouse has an S-rail, and that’s fun too.  They’ve got Nike as a park sponsor, we’ve got Quiksilver.  In the end though, who cares?  It’s so frustrating, having to deal with all the road blocks that this situation throws up when it comes to the two parks.  You go to Seymour as a Grouse rider, you get called out.  Why?  That’s absolutely retarded.  It happens at Grouse too, so don’t get too smug.  Moreover, it has nothing to do with the management at either mountain.  Have you ever talked to the powers at either mountain? Nicest people ever!  It’s just skewed attitudes and ignorance of the riders that ride at either mountain that lead to more drama than all of Shakespeare’s plays put together.

So here’s the deal.  Big props to both crews, they’ve both killed it this season.  Instead of talking shit, go to one of the local parks, strap in, and get creative on what’s there.  There was a time, not too long ago, when having a box and a flat bar was a huge thing.  It’s not about who has the most legit handrail, or the most pristine jump.  It’s about doing what we do best, and that isn’t dishing beef.  It’s riding. If you’ve forgotten what having fun and just riding looks like, here are a few videos to refresh your memory.

Thank you Crapneto, for keeping the fun in snowboarfunding.

Love and Peace,

Sam

It’s Snowing, It’s Snowing!

Good news, there’s fresh snow on the ground.  The recent dip in temperatures have resulted in a frosting on all the locals.  Much needed frosting, to say the least.  Let’s hope the temperatures stay low and the base starts to build up so the park crew can get more going in the Quiksilver park.  Not to say what they’ve provided us with given the conditions isn’t absolutely phenomenal.  You guys kill it!  Anyways, that’s all I really wanted to say.  Also, if you really want to know what my unfiltered thoughts are on snowboarding, the Olympics and life in general, feel free to get on Twitter and follow my useless banter or get in touch with me. Or don’t.  Your call, really.

PS: I miss riding with Jordan Johnstone and Max Buchanan. If you’re reading this, go riding more.

Here are some more pictures from the Oakley Night Jam, taked by one of our latest additions to Grousepark.com, Hamish Baxter.  Our bloggers kill it!

Holla

So here it is; my first post to Grouse Park.  Being as none of you really know me, I should probably introduce myself.  My name is Hamish and I’m Scottish.  I grew up there, though I now live near Boston, MA.  I started snowboarding in Waterville Valley (East Coast jeaa!), NH, and it wasn’t long before shredding began to take over my winters.  I finished high school after a few years of being a weekend warrior and proceeded to spend the following year as a ski bum in New Zealand and Colorado.
Now, I go to school at UBC, which despite the work and classes, really isn’t all that far off from living like I did in a ski resort.  I’m up at Whistler pretty much every weekend, and now, thanks to Sam as well as all of you reading this, am going to be spending a lot more time on the North Shore Mountains shooting photos… stoked! But rather than go on rambling, I’m going to leave you with two of my photos; the first is from the bottom of the world, and the second is from a more familiar place just up the road.
Enjoy.

Another Introduction

Allow me to introduce myself.  My name is Bill Hawley.  Born and raised seven minutes from the mountains in North Vancouver, I’m a new addition to the Grouse Park Blog and very grateful for it!  As much as I’m new to the blog, I’m not so new to the mountain. I started skiing at Grouse when I was 3 years old and it just became the regular thing to do after school and on weekends. Things progressed from there and when I was about 12 years old, I picked up my parents little point and shoot camera, took a few pictures around the house to keep myself busy and that’s when I realized what I wanted to do for fun.  Skiing and photography.  Now, I’m finally starting to combine the two and it’s proving to be the most kick ass thing I know how to do.

So, now that you know who I am, don’t be shy if you see me up the mountain, I’m the guy wearing the bright blue jacket and pants looking like I shouldn’t be shredding the park.  Come say hi and maybe strike up a conversation! The temperature’s dropping a little bit, so let’s be optimistic and say that’s a sign of snow on the way. Here’s some of my most recent shots to keep you stoked on the season, enjoy!

It’s Sunny, Go Shred!

Hey all,

Contrary to popular belief, Grouse Mountain is still super fun right now.  Call up a couple homies and hit it up.  Get creative and you’re bound to have a good time.  Just ask local boy Shayan Aghourlikhani.  I got a call from him yesterday afternoon and he was having a heck of a good time with fellow local and grom, Kevin Dzah.  Temperatures are dropping, snow may be coming, but go now and enjoy yourselves.

Also, I’m stoked to announce that we’ve taken on two new bloggers for the remainder of the season.  Grouse local and aspiring pro photographer, Bill Hawley, and a guy that I can’t say enough good things about, Hamish Baxter are both on board to bring you more content from the hills.  Both these guys travel a bunch and they’ll be sure to bring you not only what’s fresh on the local scene, but also around BC and maybe outside of BC too.  And you thought the universe ended outside these borders.  They’ll be introducing themselves real soon, so watch for that.

Cheers,

Sam
