As you may have heard, last week was Grenade Games 6 as well as Telus Festival up in Whistler. It was fun to watch the events, especially when the sun was out. In all, everyone seemed to have had a great time and along with the free live entertainment, there were a lot fun events to watch. This is a video tease from the Grenade Games 6 Grand Finale.
So the other day Jon Olsson Super Sessions wrapped up and awards were handed out. All the riders threw down and all the edits were banger but in the end our very own Team Canada took it! Here are the results of the competition and the winning video.
Results
1) Team Canada
2) Team Newschoolers
3) Team Norway
4) Team America (and winner of the People’s Choice Award)
5) Team Sweden
6) Team Down Under & Team Europe (tie)
For those of you that have not heard of Jon Olsson Super Sessions or Jon Olsson for that matter..quit riding! Just kidding. But, I do hope you’ve heard of him. Jon Olsson is a super pro freestyle skier and racer. He’s been hot on the scene for years and doesn’t do too badly for himself seeing as he drives a Lambo to the hill. Anyways, several years ago Jon started his own competition called the Jon Olsson Invitational because he was fed up with formats and poorly built features of other comps. This competition has turned into JOSS.
JOSS has been voted as the most prestigious freeskiing event of the season. In this competition 21 of the world’s best freeskiers and 12 of the world’s finest ski film makers work together in 7 different teams, representing 7 nations. The teams are: Sweden, Norway, Europe, Down Under, Newschoolers, USA and Canada. Each team consists of 5 people, 2 filmers, 2 pro skiers and a rookie skier. The rookie is new for this year and the only condition to classify as a rookie is that you haven´t participated in X-games before 2010.
The teams have 264 hours to let out their creativity on the features in and around Åre including urban features. The goal is to put together the most amazing and entertaining 5-minute edit. There’s a healthy cash prize and winner takes it all.
The teams’ efforts will be unveiled at the Mix Megapol Arena in front of a massive audience. This venue is somewhat of a gala night. Different nominations and awards are handed out here but instead of rewarding the best sound etc the best trick is rewarded, the most spectacular crash etc. All the 5-minute edits are shown and the judges will present the winner of JOSS 2010.
Saturday WAS a brilliant day! The park was sick and the vibes were good. I showed up slightly late but still managed to catch some very prize worthy action. Flips, spins, grabs, and hand drags were thrown down all day and it was all topped off with sunny skies and warm temperatures. Here are some more shots!
Cam Harris boosting over the hip with a 3
Method off the spine, so dialed
Grousepark.com's own Jason Frodo MacBaggins out getting some GoPro footage
There were a lot of flips hucked, almost too many, and Sam made sure everyone knew about it
Saturday was a good day. No, scratch that, Saturday was a brilliant day. The sun came out in force, along with all the local shreds to get radical for the Oakley Year End Jam. The park setup was stella, with people throwing themselves into all sorts of ridiculousness, all egged on by Sam, the megaphone fiend. The prize bank was deep and everyone left stoked, so props to all those that made it happen, it was awesome!
Yesterday afternoon, on a spring day that could not have been any more perfect than it was, with a park setup built especially for the occasion, the good folks at Grouse Mountain Terrain Parks and Grousepark.com threw a season ending jam for the ages. Shaw Butterworth, Marcus Cartwright, Adam Nicolls, Tom Robinson and Dan Ripper were up early yesterday morning, hoping to get some solid build time, only to run into technical difficulties. With all issues finally resolved at 10 am, they went to work to build a formidable set up consisting of two jumps, a hip and a variety of rails. The hip seemed to be the feature of the afternoon, with kids sending it bigger than I’ve ever seen at a local Grouse event. I won’t ramble on too much as the other bloggers will be bringing you better coverage, pictures and some Go Pro footage. I just want to thank everyone from park crew that was there helping with the jam. Rob Morrison came out for his afternoon shift and helped out huge with course maintenance and tear down. I also want to give a huuuge shout to Jeff Silcock, Grouse Mountain’s Events and Sponsorship manager. Jeff is a background guy, you don’t really see what he does, but without this guy, we’d have no park and the parks definitely would not have grown to where they are. Jeff was there taking pictures all afternoon and you can find them all on our Facebook fan page.
Sunglasses and smiles all around.
Thanks to our sponsors, Quiksilver, DC, Oakley and Roxy, as well as Pow Gloves for hooking up over $3000 worth of prizing. Also, huge thanks to everyone that showed up and ripped hard. Most of you took a tongue lashing from me and put up with it. Not that you really had a choice. It’s tough love, kiddies. You’ll thank me one day. I called the local scene out on their lack of A-game, but you all definitely brought the noise yesterday. We’ll be back next season with more prizing to give away, hopefully I’ll be back as well, but that’s up to Jeff and the crew downstairs. Here’s to hoping we can get the parks bigger and better next year!
No one took me up on my offer to dance for a pair of goggles. Weak.
Aight kids, it’s here, the last Oakley park jam of the season. We’re dropping this one on a weekend and doing it in the afternoon, so you have no excuse to not be there. This Saturday, April 10th, we’re gonna get things started at 1pm. The format is simple, ride and we’ll hook you up if we something we like. The prize pool is going deeper for this one. We’ve got goggles, sunglasses, softgoods, outerwear, boots and even a board to give away for this event, so you’ll definitely want to be there and you’ll want to bring your friends, girlfriends, boyfriends, friends you used to hang out with in elementary but now hate because they wear Ed Hardy. You get the idea. Park crew has been killing it with their park builds and the Cut park has been extended further down the cut to accommodate 3 jumps and a hip as well as a bunch of jibs. There are also some features that you normally wouldn’t see in the park on an average day, which will be closed till Saturday. You’ll be getting a sneak peek at those tomorrow morning if you check back.
So, there you have it. Saturday at 1, the Peak of Vancouver is gonna get hyphy. Rumour has it that PYP will also be out in full force. you won’t want to miss this one.
