What is DRINK WATER?

If you watch snowboard videos online, or follow snowboarding at all for that matter, you may have noticed some high profile shreds sporting DRINK WATER stickers on their boards, t shirts, hoodies, or hats. You might be wondering; "What is DRINK WATER?"

I'm thirsty now, are you?

DRINK WATER was started in 2011 by snowboard pros Austin Smith and Bryan Fox in response to the large marketing and advertising push from energy drink brands in snowboarding and action sports. They wanted to remind people to drink water too. If you think about it, no one is pushing water as hard as they are energy drinks. So they made some stickers and t shirts and gave them out to friends and other pro shreds. People started wearing them, they liked the idea. While traveling down this road they learned about the realities of water, and that nearly 1 billion people around the world don't have access to clean drinking water. Austin and Brian decided to take the cause one step further from just an 'awareness thing' to a tangible positive benefit. So they started to sell stickers, t shirts, hats, hoodies and water bottles. And with 10% of the profits they are donating to a non-profit organization called water.org who works to provide access to those without access through drilling wells and other actions. Here are a few water stats I pulled of the water.org website.

  • 884 Million people don't have clean water to drink
  • Every 20 seconds, a child dies from a water-related illness
  • 3.4 million people die each year from water related diseases

I like to drink a Monster or Red Bull just as much as the next guy but I try and remember to drink water first. Why? Cause you will shred better if you do. Check out these stats from HumanKinetics.com.

  • Exercise performance is impaired when an individual is dehydrated by as little as 2% of body weight
  • Losses in excess of 5% of body weight can decrease the capacity for work by about 30%

What do these #'s mean? If you are dehydrated your ollie power could decrease by up to 30%!!

If that isn't enough to convince you to down a glass alongside your can of Beaver Buzz, check out the DRINK WATER team, including Canadians Louis Paradis and Jake Kuzyk.

I think this is awesome. It shows what snowboarders can do as a community. We are a creative group with good ideas and when we want to we can offer a lot to the world on and off the mountain. I'll share a few more examples of this before the season is over. For now I am out, I need to go find a tap I am thirsty as hell after writing this post.
