So c-c-c-cold. Source: newschoolers.com

For the third year in a row, the Red Bull Cold Rush went off in a way that no other competition can. With more fresh snow than the average person sees in their lifetime, this past week at Retallak Lodge proved to be the ideal location for the top freeskiers in the world to gather and throw down. And throw down they did.

Although the three day event was first and foremost a competition, most riders acknowledged it felt more like a big session with friends and filmers. At the end of it all, Kye Petersen of Whistler BC was awarded the top spot, proving that the youngins out there are hungry and ready to show the old timers what they can do.

Flipping his way into second place was veteran freeskier and newschool legend, JP Auclair. JP showed the world that he is far from finished and still a strong force to be reckoned with. Rounding out the podium with a solid performance was none other than back-country heavy hitter, Sage Cattabriga-Alosa.

For offical videos, pictures, athlete testimonials, and more goodies, head over to newschoolers.com and see what it was all about. Also, check out the re-cut & re-count competition to win free stuff while supporting your favorite rider.

Anyone want to go to Retallak?

Scott Afterbang Contest

Afterbang: After landing a sick skiing trick you ride away all steezy and relaxed. Some people thinks this makes them look extra talented. – UrbanDictionary.com

From freeskier.com:

Scott USA respects that when you stomp a trick, you chuck in your favorite afterbang. Whether or not you know it, we make sick gloves.

In recognition of claimers worldwide, we want you to see your best afterbangs. And we’d be even more stoked to see you throw your hands in the air in proper claiming fashion (cause you definitely will once you are rocking some SCOTT gloves in victory).

Whoever has the best afterbang (some high hands so we can see your gloves will definitely help your chances) will win some SCOTT goods. Submit your best afterbang edit to freeskier.com and the top ten will win SCOTT gear.

Winners will be chosen by Scott athletes; Dane Tudor, Ian Cosco, Nick Martini, Henrik Lampert, Michelle Parker, Keri Herman, Alex Schlopy etc.

So it’s all about the ride away. It’s that simple. Stomp and ride away with style and you could score yourself some wicked Scott swag, including a pair of 173 P3 skis. Dope!

Head over to freeskier.com to find out how to enter.

In case you’ve been living under a rock for the last few years and don’t quite know how to ‘bang, or you need a little inspiration, check this video of one of the best afterbangers in the game, Jon Brogan:

Note the ride away…bangin.

Nimbus, Montage, and Pow, Pow, Pow.

Three years ago the face of skiing was forever changed by a group of skiers and a little movie called Idea. Eric Pollard, Andy Mahre and Pep Fujas opened people’s minds to what was possible on a pair of skis in powder snow. Nimbus Independent was born.

Pollard and crew stepped up their game the next season and produced Hunting Yeti, a 5 part web series followed by a DVD compiling the highlights. This year the Nimbus crew is at it again with their third release, En Route.  So far the crew have pow-slashed their way through Japan and Austria. Check the website for their latest webisodes.

Warning: Extreme Pow Shreddage Ahead! If nothing done by Nimbus gets you stoked then please do not read on.

If you don’t know…now you know. Montage Inc is here to stay. Based out of California, these guys are really showing the big boys at Nimbus that they know a thing or two about shredding pow. They just dropped their new website with a couple of sick videos, so check it out. The following clip is some of the best backcountry jumping that has ever gone down. Just see for yourself:

Assisted Snowboarding?

People are getting too good at snowboarding these days…or is there something more to the story? Here is a scary look at what is possible on a board (with a little help of course).

This video clip, created by Arvid Niklasson, is an explanation of a shot in Actionhorse Film’s 2008 release Pony Tale. It sure makes you think about the future of action sports films. Although it’s doubtful that films will ever come rely on this kind of editing and design, it is still scary to know that the technology is available.

Who knows, maybe something like this will inspire someone to get creative down the line (for real). For now, if you haven’t already seen it, check out Pony Tale and decide for yourself what is real…or not.

Superunknown VI

Put together an edit, become super famous…it’s that simple.

This week Josh Berman and Level 1 Productions dropped the 25 finalists for this year’s Superunknown contest. Now in its sixth year, Superunknown has repeatedly proven to be the contest for up and coming skiers to make a name for themselves. With a spot in Bermans next film on the line, sponsorship options, and a foot in the door to the ski industry, this year’s contest drew hundreds of entries.

The level of skiing displayed is far greater than any in years past (with the exception of Wallisch’s Superunknown IV video…but he’s not human so that doesn’t count). This year’s top 25 have more spins, flips (and a few doubles), pretzels, afterbang, tall-tees, and Lil Wayne, than one person can count. Berman and crew, who have a notorious eye for style, no doubt have a tough decision on their hands.

The winner will follow in the foot steps of previous winners, Corey Vanular, JD Zicat, Mike Clarke, Tom Wallisch, and Jon Brogan. Even the runner-ups benneift from this contest. In years past loosing entrys have included: Ahmet Dadali, Mike Honrbeck, Ian Cosco, Nick Martini, and Mike Riddle…just to name a few.

So check ‘em out! Watch them all and let me know who you think deserves the win. Or if you don’t have the time, here are some of the top favorites over at newschoolers.com:

Halfpipe and Rail Jams

Unfortunately injuries happen. Its the nature of our sport. They can (and will) happen at the most inconvenient of times. This weekend happened to be one of the biggest weekends of snowboarding the North Shore has ever seen. Fortunately for me there were plenty of events even a gimp could attend, so missing the 48 hours of winter, thanks to a strained MCL and meniscus, was not all that bad.

I got a call on Saturday morning from a friend who had come across two VIP passes to the LG FIS Snowboard World Cup Halfpipe event taking place later that day on Cypress. I gladly accepted the offer and we rolled up just in time to catch the finals. Some of the best pipe riders in the world were in attendance and all were throwing down under the slightly snowy skies. From the bottom of the pipe, we witnessed some of the greatest riding any of the local mountains have ever seen.

The pipe.

All the men were killing it but, to nobody’s surprise, Shaun White dominated the field and added another notch to the bedpost. The highlights of White’s winning run was his massive first hit and back to back 1080′s. Coming in second was Ryoh Aono from Japan and Iouri Podladtchikov from Switzerland rounded out third.

Kelly Clark took the win for the women with a mix of backside and front 5′s, lofty airs and a front 7. In second was Jiayu Liu of China and Hannah Teeter took third.

After sampling a few bevys in the athletes tent, we dropped down to Park Royal to check the LG Mountian Festival Rail Jam. The setup was fairly mellow which meant the riders could get tech if they wanted to. Jed Anderson slayed it and took home first. Jesmond Dubeau took second and Cory Gallon came third. For the women, only three competed and Jess Kimura ended up on top.

Rail Jam on top of Park Royal? Rad.

My camera could not keep up with the amazingness.

On Sunday the Park Royal rooftop played host to some of the local riding talent with the Shop Rail Takedown. Riders from Pacific Boarder, Second Wave, and Showcase competed for a 37 inch flat screen TV for their shop and $100 cash for their pockets. The riding was almost, if not as, impressive as the pros the day before, proving that the Vancouver riding scene is not to be taken lightly.

Blue skies, slush, and metal make for a perfect Sunday afternoon.

Front board.

Gettin the shot.

Pressin.

Spencer Lundin, who had been riding all night on Grouse Mountain, scored the TV for Second Wave and the $100 cash.

Lundin earning it.

Freestyling for the win.

All in all this weekend was a great taste of what is to come one year from now when the world comes to play in our backyard.

Video of both events to come soon!
