Johnny Lyall Opens the Olympics

If you caught the opening ceremonies last night, you probably saw the opening snowboard sequence in the backcountry.  If you were wondering who exactly dropped in through the rings with that burly indy, it was Grouse Mountain’s own Johnny Lyall.  With a little help from Katal Innovations, makers of the big air bag, Johnny was able to air through the Olympic rings and ride out onto the floor of BC Place with the eyes of a few billion people on him.  Here a picture from Matt Houghton’s blog on Push.ca.

Atta boy, J-Bone!  Hope you’re having a good time in Barcelona.

Olympic Torch Comes to Grouse Mountain

Yesterday, the Olympic Torch Relay made it’s way through North Vancouver and to the top of Grouse Mountain.  The flame came up on top of the Skyride in the hands of Canadian National Halfpipe team rider, Justin Lamoureux.  To mark the occasion, a torch snow sculpture was also made, visible right as you go over the second tower.  Here are a couple pictures.

In other news, it was snowing pretty hard up there, and actually felt like winter.  Here’s to hoping it doesn’t rain and crush all hopes.

Cheers,

Sam

Oakley Olympic Fashion Show

Hey all,

Oakley is having a bunch of PR events at Grouse throughout the course of the Olympics.  You may have noticed the big buses at the base in the past couple of days.  This Thursday, they’re bringing you a fashion show on the skating pond, starting at 5:30pm.  It will feature some of Oakley’s top athletes and is sure to be a fun event for all, so if you’re free, get up there and check it out.

Cheers,

Sam

Hey Guys,

I have some more posts coming soon, but check this out.  My good buddy DJEAN has a new hiphop mix out and it is awesome! DJEAN is also a snowboard instructor up here at Grouse Mountain so this mix is local and fresh!  Be sure to join his Facebook group!

Poor Boyz Productions: Revolver

“Revolver” If you haven’t already heard of it, this is the follow up to the highly hyped “Everyday is a Saturday” movie from Poor Boyz Productions. This year, they’ve dropped an extremely early and extremely sick teaser. The cast is pretty much made up of the same boys give or take a few. However, that doesn’t really matter because these guys are absolutely killing it!

Check out what’s been going down!

Oakley Night Jam: The Edit

This past Friday was the third night jam of the season.  The jam took place in the new Cut park, which is amazing for the amount of snow we have.  The grand prizes included two Oakley goggles and a pair of Oakley sunglasses.  Check out what went down during and after the jam in the little edit below.  Thanks to Charlie for announcing.

Oakley Night Jams 3: Cut Edition

Last night was the Oakley Night Jam. Chuck was on the mic, keeping everyone entertained, Tamo was judging snowboarders, Peter helped out with the ski side of things and everyone was throwing down. The prizes weren’t being thrown out for nothing, the kids had to work for ‘em, so the result was a sick little competition. If you haven’t already heard, the park has been moved over to the left side of Cut and it is actually really fun. The park crew had to get creative but they’ve put a pretty rad setup together so check it out this week.

The comp started off with tricks being called out and prizes were given for whoever could do them first. Then, the format was changed up and there were qualifiers, where the first 3 people to do the designated trick would get into finals. Next, finals were moved to the elbow kink where the finalist who did the right trick first won.

In the end, the winners were Mr. Ben Neil on the ski side of things, walking away with a new pair of Oakley Ambush goggles and Oakley sunglasses, and an underdog on the snowboard side of things, whose name I still don’t know, but he fought hard for the win after turfin’ it pretty hard a few times, snaking a pair of Oakley Crowbars for his efforts. All in all, it was an awesome night, one of the best night jams yet! Don’t miss the next one, who knows it could be even better! Here are some shots:

Well there ya have it! Some kid even went as far as saying that Chuck was the funniest guy around. So, Chuck is officially the funniest guy out there and the park is still kickin’ and better than ever, so get up the mountain as soon as you can and have a good old time!

SIA 2010 Tradeshow

New product is awesome. So awesome in fact, that for a few days in Denver, the shred industry had a little party to show off all of next year’s awesomeness. I can only wish I’d been there for it, but instead here is a post courtesy of Snowboard Mag that recaps what went down and what’s coming out next year. Enjoy.

Flash Photography V2.0

After a few weeks of mixed up orders and payment problems, I am finally in possession of my Alienbees Cybersync trigger/receiver remote setup for my flash. I took it out to Seymour to shoot the Red Ledge on the weekend but as I said in that post, I had some troubles with misfiring. I think I finally had things figured out tonight and I am quite happy with how the shots turned out. Here’s the final product.
