A Powder Bonanza
It’s been a busy week for myself. Between covering the MGT snowboard camps, school starting and my girlfriend getting back from Calgary, I totally forgot that I had other things to fill you guys in on. Namely, some of my escapades before, during and shortly after the New Year. So, here it is now, only about a week late, a not so up to date update.
As you may have read, I injured myself while lapping the Quiksilver park one icy winter’s eve. I figured the best way to speed up the healing process was to spend a few days in Whistler, where the snow conditions weren’t as good as the local mountains. Obviously this would make me less depressed about not snozzboarding. So I booked a bus ticket with Greyhound. It’s super cheap for students, coming out to $43 round trip. That’s cheaper then gas, even with the current low prices! Anyways, I stuffed all I would need into one small backpack and trekked out to the Upper Village, where I bummed a couch off my good friend Anna, who was in town for a family reunion. Fortunately for them, I brought the killer north shore snow conditions with me. The night I got there, it started snowing nice big, fat flakes. I spent two days off the board, walking around town, catching up with people I hadn’t seen in over a year and looking at the boards available in Whistler, all whislt drinking a large mug of tea. I didn’t bring a travel mug, so it literally was a large mug of tea.
I spent the night of December 30th with Anna and her cousins, on the hunt for those ever elusive yam fries, eventually finding some at the base of Blackcomb at Monk’s Grill Steakhouse and Bar. I nabbed myself a super large flower pot, to woo the ladies with and such. There was also some pointless meandering through the streets of the village and other such hooliganistic activities, such as going into stores and trying things you probably wouldn’t buy to wear on a normal day, such as a mummified version of myself. I also found a sign that could get me out of daily responsibilities.
Anna and the Gang

The Mummy One Million: Yet Another Sequel!

The next day, I woke up nice and early to get the most out of the day. That was the plan, anyways. I rolled out at 1 in the afternoon and got myself presentable before getting some breakfast for lunch. Anna’s mom was nice enough to prepare a full meal for me, complete with a large mug of tea. Awesome! After scarfing the eats down, I went off to the village to browse shops and see what was kicking around Whislter in terms of reverse camber boards. Surprise! There was nothing. Looks like I’m not getting one this year. Dang. Anyways, I spent the majority of my time at Showcase by the IGA talking to shop guy Jay. He was super rad. We discussed snowboarding and almost everything related to the latter for about an hour. If you’re ever in Whistler, be sure to stop by and say hi to Jay. He may even give you a high five. I also purchased some rub on wax and daydreamed of New Years day on the mountain.
That night was New Years Eve and what a gong show it was. Anna and I met up with local friends and shred heads Becka Peglar and Oli Mason, accompied by our friend Shawn Cavanaugh from The OG Bay, California, claining Pac as a source of pride. That a direct quote. Much ridiculousness ensued at The Crystal Lounge, where we sang along to journey, danced the robot, exchanged high fives and I somehow managed to climb a lamp post. The pictures tell most of the story.

Thumbs up for the robot!

Shawn couldn't find the button to take the picture...cause the camera was upside down. I spotted those girls from the pole.

I tried climbing it the next day and was amazed at how difficult it was.

Happy New Years!

Kristin, Myself, Lisa and Becka. I came dressed up and left dressed up, but everything in the middle was party shirt only.
I went to bed at 3 in the morning and woke up at 6 to go shred. It had been snowing all night and it was still snowing when I woke up and got to the hill. I did a couple of laps through the park, getting frist tracks in there. People like going up to the bowls for first tracks. Little secret for you all, park is where the untouched powder is and riding a box with a bunch of fresh pow is just an added bonus. After a few laps, I met up with my buddy Jon Scott and did a coupld tree lines with him before we decided to head over to 7th Heaven, which was on standby. We waited at teh base for about an hour before they finally opened the lift and were able to get 4 runs of fresh tracks before the crowds hit. Best four hits ever. While most stayed on the well traveled paths, we cut some trees lines between the carve tracks and were able to keep the snow beneath out boards fresh with endless line options. I eventually said bye to Jon and met up with Oli, Becka and Shawn who had managed to wake up and march over to the hill. More great powder runs ensued and a lap through the park before we called it a day and head down the mountain, picking up some hit tracks on the way down. Another secret, stay to the edges of runs to get those super fun quick hits that you can spin madly off of.

Waiting for first tracks.

It was fun till you got stuck in powder waist deep...then it was even better!

We all woke up to ride and the day turned out epic. No complaints here.
I left Whistler that night and had a hearty home cooked meal that night. The next morning, I was up at 6 again and this time, I was heading down to Baker after hearing that they were getting some dry, fluffy powder that you could motor through. I primed my big mountain board and hit some backcountry style booters, carved nice, narrow chutes and tweaked methods off cliffs all while staying in bounds. Ohhhh yea! Want to ask me about the best week of my life? You just read about it. A straight week of powder. What more could I ask for excpet…a few more?
On the other hand, powder sucks. Hit the Quiksilver park. Hella handrails!

An update
Hey guys and girls, here is another update!
Currently there is an inversion in Metro Vancouver, so in short, the weather in the city is pretty bunk, but the hills are BEAUTIFUL!
Here are a couple of my favourite videos at the moment.

Jon Olsson

His girlfriend! I wonder what will happen if things turn sour between them...
Hey gang,
I was just browsing around recently and came across the Videoblog of Jon Olsson. This guy has been around for ages and still proves to be one of the best park skiers ever (specializing in varied aspects, of course). This little videoblog he runs has been going strong for almost 2 years, although his new website is set up for videos dating back to only a few months ago (Why Jon?) He keeps his updates fresh and frequent, varying from park lapping, to comps, to training and so forth. He even went back to his routes and took up racing again. If that doesn’t stir up the mix then I don’t know what will. Check him out!
On a side note, for those of you who know the story of his pro model skis: first the blondes, then the brunette, then…
Check the dew tour update on his page for a better look at the skis. I can’t link you to it, but you can find it on the main page with the other recent videos (Jan 10th update)

Sick Video: Tom Wallisch
Howdy Campers,
I recently found another sick video, but this video has more of a significance when it comes to park skiing nowadays. I’m sure everyone who skis park knows exactly who Mr. Tom Wallisch is, but do you know where he came from? Wallisch has shaped park skiing and so many people out there are inspired by him. He entered this video to a competition put on by a very well known production company – Level 1 Productions – and from there he blew up. Who knew that weekend-warrior from Pittsburgh, PA could turn into one of the best all around skiers on the planet. Watch and enjoy!

MGT Academy Update
It’s official. Three girls from the first round of selections for the MGT Academy have been chosen. The camps at Grouse Mountain produced Marie-Andre Racine, Shelly Julio and Jenna-Mae Togado as candidates for the MGT Academy. The Academy will pick one girl from the pool of candidates this summer who will get the opportunity to be trained by pro female riders for rapid transit to a career in snowboarding next season. Neat! If only Translink was that good.
The three girls have also landed spots in the Roxy Chickadee Jam host by Grouse Mountain on March 1, 2009, where they’ll get a chance to strut and polish their skills. Double neat! Be sure to check out the event. You may see one of them on the cover of a snowboarding magazine in the not so distant future.
Little known fact, Jenna was fighting a bout of unhappy stomach on the second day of camp due to something she ate the night before and she still rocked. That is so punk rock. Who said girls can’t shred?

DEW it up! Freeski Slopestyle
With all this pow we’ve had recently up Grouse Mountain, its easy to forget about shredding park. For those of you in need of a little “reminder” of whats going down these days, look no further than the antics that took place this weekend at the second stop of the Winter Dew Tour at Mount Snow, Vermont.
With a slopestyle course manicured to near perfection, the level of riding on Saturday was absolutely absurd. For a little run down of course check this POV cam by the one and only Tom Wallisch provided by the good people over at freeskier.com.
As you can see, the course provided riders with everything needed to make for a contest full of flippy-spinny tomfoolery. Alexis Godbout held down third place with some bangers like a 630 off, right side 900, left 900, and switch left 900.
Making it all look easy was PK Hunder in second place. PK has been slaying the competition scene so far this season. Its tough to imagine that a run with a 360 switch up, switch on to rodeo 450 off, right side 720, switch left 900, and left 1080 could only conjure up a second place. PK appeared to have a little difficulty dropping into the second axis on his patented double cork 1080 which may have hurt his score slightly.
The double cork aside, PK’s run was still no match for first place winner, JF Houle. JF threw down some of the most technical rail tricks ever seen in competition (450 on switch up 450 out, huge 630 out, nose butter 270 on pretzel out) combined with a right side 720, left 900 and switch left 1080, JF and undoubtedly deserved the win…just watch the video.
So kids, let this be an inspiration to you! Get out there and practice up! The Quiksilver park is coming together nicely with three decent sized jumps on the left side. The rails, when not buried in pow, are perfect for getting those 270s, pretzels and k-feds down. Get practicing because the second Oakley Night Jam is coming up on January 23!
See ya up there,

Oakley NightJams postponed
Hi kids,
Sorry to break the bad news to you and have to make you change your Friday night plans but… Oakley NightJams tonight have been postponed until the next date of January 23. We will announce a make up date for later in the season.
Our hosts, Coastal Riders, made a last minute decision to bring their team out to the Billabong Ante Up QP contest that’s happening at C.O.P. this weekend. Grouse Mountain’s own, Matt Belzile, will also be competing so cheer him on to take home some of the $15K cash. The winner also gets a trip to compete at the legendary Innsbruck Air+Style.
Go Belzile go!

Killing time
With all this new snow, surely it seems fitting to make your way up the mountain. That’s what I thought until a warm swoosh of air just wandered on in, making itself comfortable and effectively providing us with that classic west coast plus 3 degree cement powder we all love.
So here we are. The days of sitting at the comp are back, killing time until it snows again. I’m confident almost everyone seeks refuge among the infinite sea of youtube videos when they’re bored, or whatever comes and goes at Transworld, Newschoolers, Push, Myfreepaysite, Neopets, whatever you’re into. But what happens when you’re bored of just watching and watching? What happens when the videos run out? Well usually its a sign to get out and do something, but for those of you who fail to acknowledge such information, feel free to try out Gnarshmallow!

I’m not going to show you how to play it. No it’s nothing fancy. Yes it’s highly addictive. This game has proven to be one of the best excuses for why you didn’t do anything the other night. Yes it’s been around for a while now, making its debut several months back as a pre-season stoke machine, but in terms of killing time, not only does it prevail, you have to use your fingers and ummmm… your mind I guess. Hey that’s a bonus, right?
So here’s to being antisocial and eyes more square than your tv.

MGT Spreads the Shred
This past weekend, Grouse Mountain was invaded by MGT snowboard camps. The two day, all girls camp was full of good times and high fives, as well as hugs aplenty. The girls were stoked to ride regardless of their riding level and there was definitely progression to be seen.
MGT Snowboard Camp Day 1
Camp got off to early morning start with registration and sign in before the sun even rose! Maybe it wasn’t that bad, and with the low overcast conditions, the sun wasn’t really rising on this dreary morning anyways. Due to road conditions and large line ups at the base of the mountain, some girls missed registration. The weather didn’t get these girls down, though! Luckily, all of them brought goggles too. After splitting up into groups, the girls got ready to spend the morning going over the basics and some brush up over techniques needed to hit the park.
I spent most of the morning session riding with Joanna’s group. She was getting the girls comfortable with riding switch and getting their ollies dialed. After a few laps on the Cut, we decided to get into some freeriding. We headed off to the Olympic chair, slashing some pow lines and making the best of the ridiculous amounts of snow Grouse was getting. The girls practiced their technique on little drops and worked on their pop and, after a few laps to get familiar with the terrain, started trying spin tricks and grabs into the pow.

Camper Jenna makes airing out of the up rail look ezee pezee
Right before lunch, the camp hit a snag with some miscommunication and lost their lift privilages. Most groups decided that they would get the girls used to the joys of hiking features in the park instead of waiting in the Screaming Eagle lift line.
After lunch, I set up in the park with Raewyn’s group and snapped some shots of her campers and some coach/camper Kodak moments… but I used a Nikon Coolpix. The girls really pushing themselves, dialing in nosepresses, 180 ons, boardslides of all varieties and 270 outs.
Leanne’s group also hit up the park, focusing on the hip. She spent some time working with the campers on backside 180′s. The girls were up for anything. No matter how hard they biffed, they’d get up, hike and try it again. There were a couple bails that would have had me rolling around for a while, but nothing could really get in the way of the eagerness these girls had to up their games. After spending some time on airing, Leanne had her group doing nose picks against the wall of the hip, just for fun.

Leanne gives her group tips on spinning on the hip
At the end of the day, the girls headed back to the chalet and said their goodbyes. Those who didn’t have to leave right at 4:30 pm headed into the Theater in the Sky to watch a screening of the new Runway film called See What I See. There were also mini cupcakes that looked so dope, I almost felt guilty eating them. Soon after, I gathered my gear, took a few laps through the park and hit the road to rest up and get ready for day 2.
MGT Snowboard Camp Day 2
As usual, I managed to sleep in through 4 alarms (yes, I have 4 alarm clocks placed in various corners of my room) and had to hustle to get to the mountain. Luckily, the roads were clear and the cloud coverage was high. I decided to grab a digital SLR for the afternoon, as visibility on the mountain was crystal clear.
While in the rookie park, I met up with some guys who were over from Belgium to do some filming on the west coast. The riders hand shaped the hip to their liking and used it as a transfer into the untouched powder behind the feature.
I spotted Robin’s group riding the lift soon thereafter and decided to get some aerial shots of the park. Fortunately, MGT had worked out the kinks with line priority overnight and the campers got more ride out of their day. The morning park lappers were scarce, as a few of the groups had decided to head to the Olympic chair for some exquisite freeriding. I didn’t get a chance to catch up with them, but heard they were able to get some while it was still fresh. Lesson to be learned here: Play in the powder with it’s tracked before heading to the park.
The campers and coaches then head into the chalet for some quick eats and hugs. They were joined by local Dragon Optics and Thirty Two Boots rep Dixon, who did a couple laps with the girls after lunch. If you’re looking to score a limited ed Thirty Two Jacket…you’re out of luck!

Dixon in his rad Thirty Two jacket, as Leanne and Amanda converse...the topic was most likely something about Amanda being a bum model.
Sometime between the time I walked into the chalet and the time I walked out, the weather had taken a turn for the worse, with high wind warning and super limited visibility. Regardless of the conditions, I trekked to the rookie park and set up my camera equipent by the box, hoping to get some decent shots, regardless of conditions. The camera was not digging the temperature and snow, so I quickly threw together a weather hood for the camera, as I hadn’t prepared for the horrible conditions.
For you budding photog’s out there, here’s how you go about it. You need to be set up on a tripod for this. You make sure you’ve got enough layers on, as you will need your jacket for this. Set up your camera on your tripod, wrap the jacket around the tripod and zip it up, draping the hood over the camera and lens. Most jackets have a zip off hood, with the fronts bottoned down. This is perfect as you can zip off the back and use it as a window to your viewfinder, cause we all know you rarely use the LCD screen to view your shots.
Voila! Your lens is covered by your hood, but is not in the way, you have a full range of motion on your tripod as the jacket moves with the camera and if you have a flash, you just have to life the hood up a little to access it. If you wanna stay warm while doing this, grab a Session Stargyle softshell with built in mittens! Anyways, back to the event. I was able to get some neat-o shots.

Learning to tweak boardslides

Dialing in 270 onsLeanne shows them how to press a board into a banana
Soon after, MGT put on the Jump! Jib! Jam! The coaches called out a trick that you have to stick. The girl who did it with the most style and stuck it got a prize. The girls also had a little fun and wrapped up the event by putting out the call for the most original/creative/wowing/dirty trick. It was pretty dirty, for sure. Some of it was too hot for the internet, unfortunately.

Leanne = steeze or Steeze = Leanne?

Joanna sticks a half cab
The day was quickly winding down and everyone headed into Lupin’s for the wrap up. The girls entered their names into a draw and everyone went home with a draw prize. Among the loot was a brand spankin new Burton G Love, a pair of 32 boots, Dragon goggles, belts, travel hoodies, board bags, wallets and make up kits. The campers all had a good time and formed some tight friendships along the way. If all goes well, you may see a former MGT girl’s crew lapping the park in the near future.

Grand prize winner of the Burton G Love. Now all you need to do is drop some bank on Burton EST bindings so you can actually ride that.
I also ran into park volunteer James Fourty Four Anderson and his buddy in the lodge rocking some retro styles. Just a word of warning, the following picture contains some extremely good looking boys. You gotta have the skills to back up your style and you can find James in some of Charlie’s edits. C-c-c-check it!
After everything was wrapped up and Leanne and Raewyn were done with their artwork in Jenna’s copy of the Snowboard Canada Women’s Annual, we headed upstairs to the Observatory and had a few adult beverages such as hot chocolate and discussed some not so serious topics such as the future of genetic research, patterns of genetic inheritance and the real estate market.
Needless to say, I had an amazingly fun time hanging out and riding with the MGT group. Despite some administrative hiccups, the camp went down pretty well, overall. Hopefully MGT will be back at Grouse Mountain in the near future for all you girls out there that missed out this year. Their next camp is in April, check the site for more details.
THE END!
Keep shredding,
Sam
